Honey, Let’s Never Pass Out Angry Again

The article I found was called “Honey, Let’s Never Pass Out Angry Again” by Greg Kelver. It is written in first person, like the author is apologizing to his “honey” the morning after they have “passed out angry.” The title is obviously a play off the phrase, “honey, let’s never fall asleep angry again,” but instead of simply falling asleep after having an argument, this couple had a drunken fight and passed out before saying sorry.

It is not really a conventional news story in terms of style. It is told more in story form, like a dialogue or a phone conversation. It isn’t discussing a big public event or incident, it is just a man talking to his girlfriend the night after a party. He tells her he is sorry for fighting with her the night before even though he doesn’t “even remember large portions of what [they] were so angry about. Isn’t that silly?” At the end, he promises that from now on they will “always kiss each other good night before [they] fall face-first into the carpet.”

Even though the article is funny, it has a serious point buried in it. The article is trying to show how stupid people are when they drink. It is trying to tell people that it is not attractive and you end up having stupid, thoughtless fights about “spilled beer in your hair.” Today, in a lot of reality TV shows, all the time we see people have stupid fights and laughable disputes all because of the influence of alcohol. At the time, the argument seems so justified and reasonable, but by the time everyone sobers up, no one even remembers wat the fight was about in the first place.

The article also suggest that people don’t learn from their past mistakes. Even though the author promises to never “pass out angry again,” he still plans on getting smashed again, and inevitably, that drunkenness will lead to another stupid fight.

I think the message was very effective in the way it was conveyed. Just about everyone knows a couple like this and can relate to how ridiculous the situation is. It also brings to light the fact that binge drinking is a problem in America and people need to be aware of it.
