Controversy surrounding V

We touched on the main controversial issue of V during class lightly. I think the main idea links directly back to the Patriot Act and its comparison to the development of a fascist state. When it was enacted in 2001, people were frightened in the aftermath of 9/11, just as they were frightened by the St. Mary's and Three Waters incidents in the novel. In exchange for the most security possible, the people let Suttler control their lives. In 2006, when the film came out, unpopularity for the act had gained momentum and the movie just amplified the importance of not giving in to the seemingly easier way out. The difficulty of this issue is where exactly should the line be drawn between keeping citizens as safe as possible while maintaining the freedom that is at the core of the our nations design. An example of this would be Indiana's curfew law for minors. Is it just to say that it is illegal for someone to be outside? Even though it is for the safety of the kids to keep them out of trouble, should it be the job of the government and not the parent or guardian to instill discipline? I don't think any right or wrong answer can be reached to these questions, as they are just based on what your values are.
